São Paulo Futebol Clube (known only as São Paulo and whose acronym is SPFC) is a Brazilian sports association based in the city of São Paulo, capital of the homonymous state. It was founded on January 25, 1930, having interrupted its activities in May 1935, and resumed them in December of the same year. In football, it is one of the most successful clubs in Brazil, and, among its main titles, the six Brazilian championships, the three Copa Libertadores (a national record shared with Santos and Grêmio), the three World Cups (an absolute record national level), the twenty-one São Paulo championships won, and the 2012 Copa Sudamericana (national record shared with Internacional, Chapecoense and Athletico Paranaense). As for international titles, São Paulo, with 12 conquests, It is the third club in South America with the most trophies, behind only Boca Juniors and Independiente. With regard to the sum of official titles of national and international scope of Brazilian football clubs, in September 2019 São Paulo FC appeared as the greatest champion in Brazil, with eighteen achievements. The association also has a tradition in sports other than football, such as athletics, in which its athlete in the triple jump modality Adhemar Ferreira da Silva was the country's first two-time Olympic champion (Helsinki Olympics in 1952 - in which he surpassed the world record in modality - and Melbourne Olympics in 1956). After Helsinki, Adhemar broke the world record for the second time in the sport, at the Pan American Games in Mexico in 1955.
In the national ranking, São Paulo is in a position other than the first place only in the CBF Ranking, which only measures performance in the last five years, where it appears in seventh place. As for the classifications of the magazine Placar, Folha de S.Paulo and RSSSF, the club always appears in the lead.
Among the other associations in the world, Tricolor do Morumbi, one of the nicknames by which it is known, ranks eighth according to Folha de S.Paulo. According to the CONMEBOL ranking, which takes into account only the results obtained in the last five editions of competitions organized by the entity, the club is fourth among Brazilians and seventh in all of Latin America. As for the IFFHS, a statistical body recognized by FIFA and which produces a monthly ranking of clubs, Tricolor Paulista is the 10th best club currently and the 18th best of all time, being the first among Brazilian clubs. The same IFFHS elected São Paulo as the best Brazilian team of the last decade (2001-2011) and the second in South America, behind only Boca Juniors from Argentina.
According to studies by Brand Finance, São Paulo is the Brazilian club with the highest market value today, with U 95 million (about R 300 million), being 43rd among the top 50 in the world. The company BDO Brasil points out that the club's brand is the third most valuable in Brazil, exceeding R 878 million, behind Corinthians (with R 1.241 billion) and far from Flamengo (with R 1.243 billion).
On October 18, 2006, law nº 14 229 of October 11 of the same year was sanctioned in the city of São Paulo, whose bill was nº 648 of 2005, in which it is defined that on December 16 of each year "Tricolor Day" will be celebrated, thus honoring the club's founding date
